Project

Working with my mentor, Elbert Bakker, the goal of this project is to create a 90-second creative video showcasing the 2024 Communication Design graduates.

Concept

The idea is to capture the moments of the 2024 Communication Design graduates, showcasing the grad show theme, Afterglow, our creative process, and each individual’s uniqueness. It also serves as an extraordinary piece to revisit in the future. To some extent, it is a personal project.

Bringing the video to life involved plotting scripts, shooting videos, recording audio, editing videos, assembling the story, and adjusting the video to fit the theme for the grad show.

Overview

This project aims to create a 45-90 second creative video showcasing the 2024 Communication Design graduates (HIVE 12).

The video is primarily used at the 2024 grad show. The idea is to capture the moments of HIVE 12, showcasing what HIVE 12 represents, the creative process, and each of us’s uniqueness. It will also be an extraordinary piece to revisit in years. To some extent, it can be a personal project.

This project included plotting scripts, shooting videos, recording audio, editing videos, assembling the story, and adjusting the video to fit the theme, Afterglow, for the grad show.

Process
Step 1: Plotting & Scripting

The initial plotting included

  • A design quote to start the video
  • Four questions answered by students
  • Q1: What brought you here / What motivates you?
  • Q2: What do you do to start a project?
  • Q3: What is your favourite part of the design?
  • Q4: One word to describe HIVE 12 / the theme?
  • Revealing the theme of this year’s grad show
  • Flashes of student’s work
  • Ending with the animated logo

Step 2: Animatic & Music Search

Creating an animatic to test voice overlays with music and video samples, identifying the most harmonious music and voice combinations, mixing the selected music, and experimenting with different films alongside the music.

Step 3: Shooting Video & Recording Audio

February and March were dedicated to the filming and audio recording phase. Engaging with classmates and having them mock up their responses for the camera was an enjoyable process.

Step 4: Video Editing & Logo Reveal

I commenced the video editing process, arranging the students in the sequence of their responses to the questions. Animating the logo reveal was also part of the process.

Step 5: Reshooting & Rerecording

After meeting with my mentor, he suggested incorporating additional shots for specific individuals to make the video more dynamic. We also decided to rerecord some audio segments that were incomplete sentences.
